Alex Eala faced a challenging round of 16 elimination in the 2026 Upper Austria Linz, losing 4-6, 7-5 to world No. 23 Jelena Ostapenko on Wednesday evening (Philippine time).

This outcome was a departure from their encounters in 2025, where Eala had the advantage over the former French Open champion, achieving a straight-sets victory at the Miami Open and securing a three-set win at the Lexus Eastbourne Open.

Similar to her prior match against Julia Grabher, Eala found herself in another closely contested service-hold battle early on, as both players maintained strong serves through the first five games, with Eala taking a slight lead at 3-2.

However, the Filipina began to shift the baseline exchanges in her favor, breaking serve first to establish a 4-2 lead.

This advantage, though, was short-lived, as Ostapenko swiftly changed the dynamics with her characteristic aggression, breaking back in the seventh game and gaining momentum as the set progressed.

The Latvian won four consecutive games, tightening her control from the return line and taking advantage of Eala’s drop in first-serve effectiveness, ultimately clinching the opening set with a second break in the 10th game.

After the changeover, Eala elevated her performance from the baseline, taking charge of rallies earlier and stepping inside the court to start the second set with a dominant four-game run. Two solid service breaks put her ahead 4-0, with her return games proving effective against Ostapenko’s serve.

Even as Ostapenko attempted to respond, Eala remained composed during the longer rallies, briefly extending her lead to 5-1 after a quick exchange of breaks, which also saw the Latvian display visible frustration, committing a couple of double faults under pressure.

However, just as Eala seemed ready to push for a deciding set, the momentum shifted dramatically. Ostapenko regained her timing on both sides, breaking in the seventh game to ignite a remarkable comeback.

From that point, the 2017 French Open champion went on a six-game streak, overpowering Eala with aggressive tennis and flattening her groundstrokes to finish the match.

The difference in power ultimately defined the match, with Ostapenko hitting 41 winners compared to Eala’s nine.

Next, Eala will focus on another European WTA 500 event, as she prepares for her debut at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.
