In her first clay court match of the season, Alex Eala commenced with a strong performance, achieving a 6-4, 6-3 win over local favorite Julia Grabher in the round of 32 at the 2026 Upper Austria Ladies Linz on Wednesday morning, Philippine time.

Although she held a significant advantage in the rankings as the world No. 46, the Filipina tennis player encountered a challenging opponent in her Austrian rival, who has considerable experience on clay and has built her WTA achievements on this surface.

Even ranked No. 89 in the world, Grabher demonstrated her proficiency on clay early on, matching Eala shot for shot in a closely contested first set. Both competitors maintained their serves through the initial nine games, with Eala gaining a slight lead at 5-4.

As the set approached its critical juncture, Eala seized the moment and elevated her game at the perfect time to break serve in the 10th game, securing the first set in a determined manner.

The statistics highlighted just how competitive the opening set was.

Grabher had a marginal advantage in first-serve points won, converting at 65% compared to Eala’s 63%. However, the difference was evident on second serves, where the 20-year-old Filipina excelled, winning 63% of those pointsβ€”just enough to tip the scales in her favor in a closely contested Set 1.

The second set began with a similar pattern, as both players held serve through the first three games, with Eala taking a 2-1 lead. This time, however, the Filipina created a gap earlier, breaking Grabher in the fourth game to establish a 3-1 advantage.

Grabher appeared ready to regain momentum, earning two break-point opportunities in the following game. Nevertheless, Eala displayed her composure from the baseline, saving both chances and following up with a solid hold to extend her lead to 4-1.

Despite this, the Austrian remained within reach.

She managed to string together two consecutive games, highlighted by a break in the seventh, narrowing the gap to 3-4 and applying renewed pressure.

Nonetheless, Eala had the solution.

In a fiercely contested eighth game filled with prolonged rallies and shifts in momentum, the Filipina dug deep to secure another break, placing herself just one game away from closing out the set and ultimately achieving victory.

Overall, Eala’s effectiveness on second serves remained a key advantage. She won 58% of those points, in contrast to Grabher’s 50%β€”a vital edge that allowed her to maintain control during critical moments of the match.

Next for Eala is a round of 16 clash against Jelena Ostapenko, a formidable competitor on clay and a former French Open champion.
