Wales 31-17 Italy: Wales end 15-match losing run in Six Nations 1

Wales achieved their first Six Nations victory since 2023 on Saturday, defeating Italy 31-17 in Cardiff.

This win ended a 15-match losing streak in the tournament that had persisted since prior to the last World Cup.

This marks an important moment for Welsh rugby, which has experienced a significant downturn over the past three years. Following a challenging period for the sport at both the domestic and international levels, this victory will be a considerable relief for players and supporters throughout the nation.

The home team was in control during the first half. A pair of tries from No. 8 Aaron Wainwright, along with another from captain Dewi Lake and three successful conversions by Dan Edwards, allowed Wales to take a 21-0 advantage at halftime.

Edwards scored a try of his own, which he converted, shortly after the second half began, before Italy managed to get on the scoreboard.

Martino di Bartolomeo scored for the visitors, and a yellow card issued to Wales prop Archie Griffin aided Italy’s comeback.

Tommaso Allan added Italy’s second try with 20 minutes left, and Monty Ioane appeared to have secured their third, but he was deemed to have been pushed into touch by Ellis Mee before he could ground the ball in the corner.

Italy seemed poised to score again moments later when Leonardo Marin crossed the line, but his try was disallowed due to a knock-on.

Paolo Garbisi did manage to score a third try for the visitors, but it was insufficient as Wales maintained their lead for a deserved victory.
