Jamie George has stated that England’s downturn is merely temporary and is confident they will recover against Italy.

Consecutive losses to Scotland and Ireland have interrupted England’s pursuit of the Six Nations title after just three matches, erasing the enthusiasm generated by their recent 12-Test winning streak.

Two disappointing performances have raised concerns about the team’s direction, and now their match at the Stadio Olimpico on March 7 has become one they cannot afford to lose.

George, however, is optimistic about a turnaround.

“We certainly aren’t a bad team overnight. We aren’t that far away from it. There was a snowball effect in both games because of the way we started,” he remarked.

“Aside from that, we have really talented players, an excellent plan, and great coaches. I have no doubt we will return to the level we need to be at against Italy in two weeks’ time.

“The results have not met expectations. Those last two matches have been subpar. To be defeated as decisively as we have is disappointing.

“Everything is understandable, and there are likely a series of mistakes and a failure to maintain possession, which makes things very challenging.

“If you find yourself many points behind and trying to score tries while struggling to retain the ball, it becomes quite difficult.

“To allow 40 points at home is unacceptable as well. There is a considerable amount to address, but at the same time, we feel very confident that we aren’t far off.”
