WASHINGTON — Former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle was not piloting his own aircraft when it went down last month, resulting in his death along with six others, as stated in a report released on Friday by federal safety authorities. The report also indicated that none of the individuals on board were qualified to act as copilot for the plane.

The initial findings from the National Transportation Safety Board revealed that Biffle, along with the retired airline pilot Dennis Dutton, who was flying the plane, and his son Jack, all observed issues with the malfunctioning gauges on the Cessna C550 prior to the crash while attempting to return to Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina.

Biffle’s wife, Cristina, and their children Ryder, 5, and Emma, 14, perished in the incident alongside his friend, Craig Wadsworth.
