EDMONTON, Alberta – The U.S. Women’s National Team recorded its third straight win against Canada in the 2025 Rivalry Series, Presented by Discover, winning 10-4, at Rogers Place on Wednesday evening.
“I’m proud of the effort we put out tonight,” said John Wroblewski (Neenah, Wis.), head coach of the 2025 U.S. Women’s National Team. “It’s never easy to play Canada and we definitely have things we can improve on as we move into the final game of the series.”
Just 48 seconds into the game, Canada opened the scoring when a cross-ice shot from Ella Shelton deflected off Sarah Fillier and into the back of the net.
Abbey Murphy (Evergreen Park, Ill./University of Minnesota) drew the first penalty of the night, putting the U.S. on the power play. With just four seconds left in the extra skater opportunity, Tessa Janecke (Orangeville, Ill./Penn State University) tapped in a backdoor feed from Murphy to tie the game with 12:11 remaining in the first.
Murphy then gave the Team USA its first lead of the evening, receiving a breakaway pass from Laila Edwards (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/University of Wisconsin) taking it down the center ice and trickling a pass past Ann-Renée Desbiens to go up 2-1 with 9:13 in the opening frame.
With just under three minutes remaining in the period, goaltender Gwyneth Philips (Athens, Ohio/Ottawa Charge) stood tall on a Canadian breakaway to maintain the lead.
Just seconds after the key save, Jesse Compher (Northbrook, Ill./Toronto Sceptres) added Team USA’s third of the period when Kelly Pannek (Plymouth, Minn./Minnesota Frost) dug the puck out along the boards to a waiting Compher right in front of the net. Just 39 seconds later, with 1:03 remaining in the period, Kendall Coyne Schofield (Palos Heights, Ill./Minnesota Frost) added a fourth, a top-shelf snipe on a breakaway to open a 4-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
The teams scored a combined four goals in the middle frame, started by a Britta Curl-Salemme (Bismarck, N.D./Minnesota Frost) goal with 9:50 remaining in the frame. Canada then scored three straight to pull within 6-4 heading into the final period.
Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass./Seattle Torrent) cashed in on Team USA’s lucky seventh goal of the evening, one-timing a pass from Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho/Seattle Torrent). Pannek then added the eighth just moments later on a 2-on-1 feed from Coyne Schofield.
Kirsten Simms (Plymouth, Mich./University of Wisconsin) got in on the scoring with 12:56 remaining in the game, capitalizing on a power play to put Team USA up 9-4.
Murphy added her second of the game and fourth point of the night for goal number 10.
Philips made 30 saves in net.
The final game of the 2025 Rivalry Series, presented by Discover will take place Saturday in Edmonton, Alberta at Rogers Place. Puck drop is set for 9 p.m. ET and can be viewed live on NHL Network.
