MILAN – Jack Hughes (Canton, Mich./New Jersey Devils) netted an overtime game-winning goal, propelling the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team to a 2-1 victory against Canada in the gold-medal match of the 2026 Olympic Winter Games held at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena.
This triumph allowed Team USA to finish the tournament without a loss, achieving a record of 4-2-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L). The U.S. secured its third gold medal in Olympic Winter Games history (previously in 1980 and 1960) and its first in 46 years.
“This game, in many respects, served as an inspiration for our nation,” stated Mike Sullivan, head coach of the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team. “These are all exceptional players, and we functioned as a true team. Our lineup was filled with character and talent throughout.”
Matt Boldy (Millis, Mass./Minnesota Wild) initiated the scoring 6:00 into the game by maneuvering the puck over the outstretched sticks of two Canadian defenders while entering the offensive zone, setting up a one-on-one with Canadian goalie Jordan Binnington, and finishing with a backhand shot. Auston Matthews (Scottsdale, Ariz./Toronto Maple Leafs) and Quinn Hughes (Canton, Mich./Minnesota Wild) provided assists on the play.

In the second period, Brock Nelson (Warroad, Minn./Colorado Avalanche) generated a breakaway chance that was thwarted by Binnington. Shortly thereafter, U.S. goalie Connor Hellebuyck (Commerce, Mich./Winnipeg Jets) denied Canada’s Connor McDavid during a one-on-one opportunity to preserve the one-goal advantage.
Canada was awarded a lengthy five-on-three power play at 9:55 of the second period, but Hellebuyck made several crucial saves to maintain the lead.
With 1:44 remaining in the period, Cale Makar leveled the score for Canada with a wrist shot from the left circle following a faceoff.
In the early moments of the final period, Hellebuyck executed an impressive save to stop Devon Toews from close range with the paddle of his stick, keeping the game tied. Both teams failed to score in the third period, leading to overtime.
At the 1:41 mark of the extra period, Zach Werenski (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Columbus Blue Jackets) advanced the puck into the offensive zone and delivered a cross-ice pass to Jack Hughes in the slot, who then shot five-hole for the game-winning goal.
Hellebuyck recorded 41 saves in goal for the U.S.
NOTES: Team USA was outshot by Canada, 42-28 … The U.S. went 0-2 on the power play while Canada also went 0-2 … Quinn Hughes was recognized as the tournament’s Best Defender and Connor Hellebuyck was awarded the title of Best Goaltender.
