MILAN – Quinn Hughes (Canton, Mich./Minnesota Wild) netted the decisive goal in overtime, propelling the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team to a 2-1 triumph over Sweden in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Olympic Winter Games at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena.
With this victory, Team USA will progress to the semifinals against Slovakia, scheduled for Friday (Feb. 20) at 9:10 p.m. CET (3:10 p.m. ET) at Milano Santagiulia Arena. The match will be aired live on NBC and available for streaming on Peacock.
“It was an outstanding hockey match, and I couldn’t be prouder of our players,” stated Mike Sullivan, head coach of the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team. “We defeated a formidable team in Sweden. We will savor this win tonight and then focus on Slovakia.”
Jack Eichel (North Chelmsford, Mass./Vegas Golden Knights) came close to scoring at 10:21 of the first period, unleashing a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle, but his attempt was saved by Swedish goaltender Jacob Markstrom.
Early in the second period, Connor Hellebuyck (Commerce, Mich./Winnipeg Jets) thwarted Lucas Raymond’s shot from close range, maintaining the tie.

At the 11:03 mark, Quinn Hughes obtained the puck following a faceoff win in the offensive zone and passed it to Jack Hughes (Canton, Mich./New Jersey Devils) at the point, who executed a one-timer that was deflected by Dylan Larkin (Waterford, Mich./Detroit Red Wings) past Jacob Markstrom for the go-ahead goal.
The one-goal advantage persisted for most of the remaining game until, with 1:31 left in regulation and Markstrom pulled for an extra skater, Sweden’s Mika Zibanejad scored with a one-timer from the top of the left circle, equalizing the score and sending the game into overtime.
At the 3:27 mark of the extra session, Quinn Hughes maneuvered the puck into the slot and unleashed a wrist shot that hit the post and went in, securing Team USA’s advancement to the semifinals with a 2-1 win. Matt Boldy (Millis, Mass./Minnesota Wild) and Auston Matthews (Scottsdale, Ariz./Toronto Maple Leafs) provided assists on the goal.
Hellebuyck recorded 28 saves to secure the victory in goal for the U.S.
