Patrick Reed eliminated in playoff as Freddy Schott claims victory in Bahrain 1

AL MAZROWIAH, Bahrain — Patrick Reed’s attempt to secure consecutive titles on the European tour fell just short on Sunday when he was defeated in a playoff by Freddy Schott, who claimed his first title.

Reed made a bogey at the initial playoff hole, eliminating him from a three-man playoff that also featured Calum Hill.

The 24-year-old Schott secured the win on the second playoff hole after Hill drove out of bounds, mishit his fourth shot into the water, and subsequently shook hands with Schott.

Reed was aiming for a second consecutive victory, following his win at the Dubai Desert Classic the previous Sunday, as part of a busy week in which he also announced his departure from LIV Golf with the intention of returning to the PGA Tour.

Starting the weekend ten shots behind the leader, the American recorded a 6-under 66 on Saturday and a 67 on Sunday, finishing at 17-under par. He was tied for the lead in the final round after making a birdie at No. 14 for his third consecutive birdie, but he played the last four holes at 1 over.

Schott (69) bogeyed No. 17, while Hill (71), who led after the second and third rounds, three-putted for a bogey at No. 18, as they joined Reed in a playoff that was observed by Bahrain Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa at Royal Golf Club.
