VIRGINIA WATER, England — Luke Donald has chosen to return as the Ryder Cup captain for Europe, aiming to achieve the distinction of being the first captain to secure three consecutive victories.
Since Bernard Gallacher captained from 1991 to 1995, no one has held the captaincy for three successive Ryder Cups. Donald guided Team Europe to triumph outside Rome in 2023, followed by a win at Bethpage Black in New York in September. European players already regard him as one of the finest captains in Ryder Cup history.
The decision now lies with the Americans regarding who will compete against Donald. Tiger Woods remains the leading candidate, as he was prior to the last Ryder Cup. Woods has yet to confirm whether he has the availability. The Associated Press reported last week that Woods is being urged to make a decision by the end of the month.
The 2027 Ryder Cup will take place at Adare Manor in Ireland. Europe has not suffered a loss in a Ryder Cup on home turf since 1993.
