LA QUINTA, Calif. — Ludvig Åberg, a two-time Ryder Cup participant, withdrew from The American Express on Saturday due to an illness, marking the fourth withdrawal this week from the first PGA Tour event on the mainland.

Åberg was at 7-under par and competing on the Stadium Course at PGA West when he decided to withdraw. This marked his first appearance of the year.

Around this time last year, Åberg experienced an illness that resulted in a 10-pound weight loss. He was in contention at Torrey Pines, persevered through the weekend, and finished with scores of 74-79. He had to withdraw from his subsequent event but returned to Torrey Pines for the Genesis Invitational — which relocated from Riviera due to the Pacific Palisades fires — and secured a victory.

Luke Clanton, Rico Hoey, and Nick Dunlap had previously withdrawn from The American Express.

During the initial three rounds, players are paired with amateurs. Former PGA Tour player Jeff Gove stepped in for Åberg to ensure his amateur partner had a companion. Gove was the last player (ranked No. 144 in the standings) to qualify for the inaugural FedEx Cup playoffs event in 2007.
