Wrexham expresses disappointment following expensive defeat to Hull

Phil Parkinson remarked that his Wrexham team was “feeling sorry for themselves” after suffering a 2-1 defeat at home to fellow promotion contenders Hull, missing the opportunity to ascend to fifth place in the Championship.
Wrexham could have surpassed the Tigers with a win but instead faced their first loss in five league matches, conceding goals in both halves from Joe Gelhardt and Lewis Koumas, before Nathan Broadhead’s strike in the 76th minute provided a fleeting glimmer of hope for a late rally.
This loss occurred just three days following Wrexham’s exhilarating 4-2 FA Cup defeat to Chelsea in extra time, a match that took its toll as leading scorer Kieffer Moore was absent due to a hamstring injury sustained on Saturday, while George Dobson was serving a suspension after receiving a red card against the Premier League side.
“I just felt there’s an element of maybe Kieffer getting injured, Dobbo suspended, a little bit maybe feeling sorry for ourselves,” Parkinson stated.
“We’ve consistently demonstrated resilience here. We’ve encountered numerous games and moments where people have questioned, ‘How will they recover from that setback?’
“And I just sensed with the news about Kieffer and Libby [Cacace, also injured] and similar issues, there was a slight sense of flatness within the dressing room.
“However, we must rise above that and come out fighting on Friday [against Swansea].”
Parkinson indicated that it was premature to provide a specific timeline regarding Moore’s injury but noted that the 33-year-old should be regarded as a “big doubt” for Wales’ World Cup qualifying playoff against Bosnia and Herzegovina on March 26.
“I think we’ll have more clarity in a week or two, but given that timeframe, I would say he is a doubt for that, a significant doubt,” he mentioned.
Hull maintained control for the majority of the match, facing little trouble until Broadhead’s late goal gave Wrexham a chance for an improbable comeback.
Their eighth victory in the last ten away matches places them six points ahead of Wrexham and nine points above seventh-placed Derby, solidifying their position in the playoff race.
This result also avenged their Carabao Cup defeat here in August when Ollie Palmer scored two late goals to equalize a 3-1 Hull lead before Wrexham triumphed on penalties.
Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic stated: “It’s a very important three points and a significant victory against a very strong team. They have demonstrated their quality all season, playing well, particularly at home.
“They are quite dangerous, and you can never be certain here, even if it’s two or three goals up, because we have already experienced that in the summer during the EFL Cup… I believe we played very well tonight.”
