USWNT clinches SheBelieves Cup championship with goal from Alyssa Thompson 1

HARRISON, N.J. — Alyssa Thompson netted a goal in the 82nd minute to end a goalless deadlock, leading the United States to a 1-0 victory over Colombia on Saturday, securing the SheBelieves Cup.

This marked the eighth consecutive shutout for the United States, which has not conceded a goal since a 3-1 win against Portugal in October. Additionally, it was the U.S. team’s eighth overall triumph in the SheBelieves Cup, which is now in its 11th edition.

Earlier in the day at Sports Illustrated Stadium, Canada triumphed over Argentina 3-2 in a penalty shootout following a scoreless match.

With the win against Colombia, the United States completed the SheBelieves Cup tournament without a loss. Canada placed second after suffering a 1-0 defeat to the United States on Wednesday, while Colombia secured third place. Argentina ended the four-team, round-robin tournament in last position without scoring any goals.

The United States holds a record of 12-0-2 against Colombia historically. The only instance in which Las Cafeteras found the net against the Americans was during the group stage of the 2016 Olympics, resulting in a 2-2 draw.

After a scoreless first half, U.S. defender Naomi Girma was substituted due to calf tightness.

Thompson, who plays for Chelsea, received a cross from Jaedyn Shaw and skillfully scored in the upper corner of the net off the crossbar, beyond the reach of Colombia goalkeeper Katherine Tapia.

This was Thompson’s fourth international goal, which also earned her the tournament’s MVP accolade.

Prior to the match, the United States paid tribute to former midfielder Tobin Heath, who officially retired last year after dealing with a persistent knee injury.

Heath, a two-time Women’s World Cup champion with the United States in 2015 and 2019, played her final national team match in 2021. Over her 13-year career, she made 181 appearances for the national team, scoring 36 goals.
