Diego Simeone stated that Julián Álvarez’s goal and assist during Atlético Madrid’s 4-0 victory over Barcelona in the Copa del Rey will aid the forward in bouncing back after a stretch of 11 matches without scoring.

The prominent forward Álvarez had not scored since December 9, but he played a significant part in Thursday’s semifinal first leg triumph for Atlético at the Metropolitano.

The Argentina international assisted January acquisition Ademola Lookman to extend Atlético’s lead to 3-0 within the first half hour, before netting a fourth goal to ensure the home team went into halftime with a commanding advantage.

“The facts speak for themselves with [Álvarez],” Simeone remarked in his post-match press conference. “The assist for Lookman was exceptional. [Álvarez’s] effort in the first half was remarkable.

“Scoring goals is something he possesses, and thankfully he’s back. He required that goal immensely, and it will undoubtedly help him prepare for what lies ahead.”

“[Álvarez] is an extraordinary player and individual,” full-back Nahuel Molina commented. “He’s a winner … He’s a competitor, and he will always strive to keep progressing because he’s an outstanding person.”

Atlético has experienced inconsistent form, and the Copa presents their best opportunity for silverware this season as they find themselves 13 points behind the top of the LaLiga standings, while also preparing for a Champions League playoff against Club Brugge later this month.

Atlético and Barcelona will now have to wait three weeks for the second leg of their semifinal, scheduled at Camp Nou on March 3.

Simeone commended the “energy” at the Metropolitano following his team’s first-half dismantling of Hansi Flick’s Barça, who had previously defeated Atlético 3-1 in their last LaLiga encounter in December.

“The four forwards — Giuliano [Simeone], Julian, [Antoine] Griezmann, and Lookman — effectively exploited the spaces left by the opponent,” Simeone noted.

“This match will remain in our memories, regardless of the outcome of the tie. We will recall a performance like this. Our supporters need matches like this, significant games, semifinals.”
