San Jose Earthquakes acquire Timo Werner from Leipzig on a contract until 2028.

The San Jose Earthquakes have officially acquired RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner as a designated player until 2028, as confirmed by the MLS club on Thursday.
With the team losing both Josef Martínez and Cristian Espinoza to free agency, and a source corroborating a report from The Athletic that forward Cristian Arango is likely moving to Colombian club Atlético Nacional, Werner’s addition is particularly timely.
Espinoza and Martínez contributed a total of 18 goals and 14 assists last season.
At 29 years old, Werner has made only three appearances this season, accumulating 13 minutes in what marks his second tenure with Leipzig. He was on loan at Tottenham Hotspur for parts of the last two seasons, where he netted just three goals in 41 league and cup matches.
He will take up an international roster position.
“We’re thrilled to bring Timo Werner on board,” said Earthquakes sporting Director and head coach Bruce Arena. “I believe he will be a fantastic addition to our squad, and we are eagerly anticipating his arrival in San Jose. Having a player of Timo’s quality joining us is exceptional for both the club and the community. I am confident he will provide us with skill on the field, along with experience and leadership.”
San Jose indicated that they obtained the forward’s discovery priority from New York Red Bulls in exchange for $50,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM).
“Deciding to move to America is always significant, but everything is in place for success,” Werner stated. “The stadium and facilities are impressive. Additionally, I was particularly struck that an accomplished manager like Bruce, who has achieved so much in the league, traveled to Germany to discuss the plan with me.
“The Earthquakes fans can expect a player who gives his all on the pitch every match. At every club I’ve joined, my goal has been to win a trophy. Ultimately, I have always delivered. That’s why I want to come to San Jose, to win.”
Having been capped 57 times for Germany, Werner’s peak performance occurred during a four-season period with Leipzig from 2016-2020, where he scored 95 goals in 159 league and cup appearances.
He subsequently played two seasons with English Premier League club Chelsea FC, where he scored 23 goals across all competitions from 89 appearances. He began his professional career with VfB Stuttgart in 2013, having progressed through their academy.
Werner made his debut for the German national team in 2017 and has since scored 24 goals. He was selected for the squads for the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020.
The San Jose Earthquakes will commence their 2026 MLS season on February 21, facing Sporting Kansas City at PayPal Park.
