Spain international Dean Huijsen has expressed regret on Real Madrid’s Weibo account for sharing social media content deemed offensive to Asians, according to EFE.

Huijsen, 20, had shared an image of an Asian individual accompanied by comments that Chinese users deemed racist due to references to the shape of the person’s eyes.

The post has since been removed from the Real Madrid defender’s account.

“I sincerely apologize to my Chinese friends,” the statement, issued in Chinese on Weibo, stated.

“I unintentionally shared content that contained offensive messages. It was entirely unintentional, and I regret the upset caused.”

Weibo is among the largest social media platforms in China, boasting over 582 million monthly active users.

Neither Madrid nor Huijsen has issued that statement on any of their other social media platforms, leading to criticism from Chinese fans, who have not only questioned the adequacy of the apology but are also calling for a global apology or a video, rather than a written statement.

In 2024, a Real Madrid supporter shared a song that was offensive to the Chinese, which was characterized as “insulting to China, vulgar and of bad character” by the Chinese Embassy in Spain.

The club, through diplomatic channels, condemned the video and clarified that it did not reflect the club’s values.

Huijsen’s apology coincides with the club’s anticipation of UEFA concluding an investigation into allegations of racist abuse directed at their player Vinícius Júnior by Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni.
