Mexico issues visas to select Iraqi players for World Cup qualifying match. 1

MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has commenced issuing visas to members of Iraq’s national team in preparation for their World Cup playoff match set for March 31 in Monterrey.

The Iraqi squad is encountering logistical challenges due to disruptions stemming from the Iran war.

“On March 8, several players were processed at the Mexican Embassy in Saudi Arabia, and tomorrow additional individuals are scheduled for processing at the Embassy in Qatar,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a release late Monday.

The government did not disclose the identities or the number of players who received visas.

Iraq is poised to compete against the victor of the playoff semifinal between Suriname and Bolivia for a chance to qualify for the World Cup.

Iraq head coach Graham Arnold has requested FIFA to delay the final. With Iraqi airspace closed, Arnold’s team — primarily composed of players from the domestic league — is unable to assemble completely.

Mexico does not maintain an embassy in Iraq.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs further noted that it is in communication with the Iraqi Embassy in Mexico and is prepared “to offer all necessary support in documenting the members of the Iraqi national team.”

Iraq’s prematch training camp in Houston has already been postponed, with visa and travel uncertainties adding further pressure on Arnold’s preparations.

Iraq aims to qualify for its first World Cup since 1986.
