Club América’s head coach Andre Jardine reported that Mexico national team goalkeeper Luis Ángel Malagón sustained a “serious injury” that seems to be an Achilles tear during Tuesday’s Concacaf Champions Cup victory against the Philadelphia Union, casting doubt on his World Cup prospects.

“It appears to be a rather serious injury. We will see, likely an Achilles tendon issue, hopefully not a complete tear, but probably at least a partial rupture, which will keep him sidelined for an extended period,” stated the Liga MX coach following the 1-0 win over the Union.

“The victory was significant, but ultimately there was a sense of sadness for Malagón; we care for him deeply.”

Malagón fell to the ground in distress during the first half of the match due to a non-contact injury to his left foot, necessitating a substitution in the 42nd minute for backup goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota.

Shortly thereafter, Club América released a statement indicating that Malagón would undergo examinations to assess his medical status. After the final whistle, Jardine nearly confirmed the Achilles tear. Regardless of the injury’s severity, as mentioned by the Club América coach earlier, Malagón is not anticipated to return to play in the near future.

With three months remaining until the World Cup and Malagón’s availability in serious jeopardy, Chivas goalkeeper Raúl “Tala” Rangel seems to have a slight advantage for Mexico’s No. 1 position. Santos Laguna’s Carlos Acevedo and 40-year-old veteran Guillermo Ochoa are also potential candidates to start in goal for ‘El Tri’ during the tournament.

For Club América, Cota is now poised to be the new starter for the Mexico City team, which will host Mazatlan at home in Liga MX action this Sunday, followed by a home match against the Union on March 18 in the second leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup round of 16 series.
