MUNICH, Germany — Manchester United manager Marc Skinner urged the club to enhance its depth to compete effectively in Europe following a 5-3 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals, stating that this loss could serve as the “wake-up call” necessary for the club to align its spending with that of Europe’s elite teams.

The visitors entered Wednesday’s second leg trailing after Bayern had claimed a 3-2 victory in the first match in Manchester the previous week. Although they equalized the aggregate score early in Munich, the hosts managed to score twice in quick succession during the final 10 minutes, eliminating United, who were making their debut in a full run of the competition.

United surpassed expectations by reaching the knockout stages, but after recognizing the gap in resources between the top clubs in Europe and United, Skinner emphasized the need for the club to match the financial commitments of those leading teams.

“I believe we will gain insights into the investment required to compete at this level consistently,” he remarked following the defeat. “We are still evolving as a club, certainly we are.”

“Given that we represent Manchester United, there is an expectation for us to be the best team globally. We share that expectation. This is the critical point, as we aspire to be the best.”

“We must develop because we are only eight years old. If we aim to compete at this advanced stage, we have recognized what is necessary as a club. Now, it is our decision to determine what we genuinely want to achieve, and we will learn and grow from this experience. Even as an organization, we are still in the learning phase. Sometimes, it takes a punch in the face to awaken us.”

United had only four outfield substitutes available due to the absence of eight players from injuries, many of which Skinner attributed to excessive overuse.

According to the latest financial reports, United’s wage expenditure of Β£5.88 million was approximately half of Arsenal’s spending from the previous season (Β£11.3m). Additionally, they allocated significantly less on agent fees — Β£197k — while Chelsea, the top spenders, had an expenditure of Β£1.08m.

Bayern Munich advance to the UEFA Women’s Champions League semifinals after defeating Manchester United 2-1 in the quarterfinal second leg.

“We need to construct a team with the highest level of experience,” Skinner continued. “Having the necessary depth to compete — we have now experienced it — possessing both depth and the experience that comes with it is crucial if we wish to progress further in these competitions.”

“I have enjoyed the competition, the various levels of play, and the different experiences, but with eight players currently unavailable, we simply could not compete adequately in that second half. If we had those players, I genuinely believe we could have advanced tonight, given how well we performed in the first half.”

“We have now had a taste of it. We need to build the squad with that depth of experience to reach that level, if that is our goal.”
