Real Madrid has announced that Kylian Mbappé is experiencing a sprain in his left knee, indicating that tests have shown that the “conservative treatment” he is currently receiving is the most appropriate course of action.

Mbappé has faced discomfort in his knee since December, resulting in him missing multiple matches, leading Madrid to determine that the France international needs an extended, unspecified period of rest. Coach Álvaro Arbeloa mentioned last week that his absence “won’t be a question of days.”

“Following examinations conducted on our player Kylian Mbappé by French medical professionals, under the oversight of Real Madrid’s Medical Services, the diagnosis of a sprain in his left knee has been confirmed, along with the appropriateness of the conservative treatment he is currently undergoing,” Madrid stated in a concise announcement on Monday. “His recovery will be closely monitored.”

This marked the first occasion the club has released an official medical update regarding Mbappé’s knee issue, with ambiguity surrounding the severity of the injury prompting extensive speculation in the Madrid press.

In comments made on Sunday, Arbeloa emphasized that the club was “very clear” about the situation and the steps they would take.

Madrid had attempted to manage Mbappé’s knee issue by resting him for the Champions League match against Manchester City in December, the semifinal of the Spanish Supercopa in January, February’s league victory over Real Sociedad, and last week’s playoff second leg against Benfica.

“It’s very clear to us: what’s wrong, and what we want now,” Arbeloa stated on Sunday. “It’s that [Mbappé] recovers fully from the discomfort, so he can return at 100%, with complete confidence and security — when he feels entirely recovered, and that discomfort has vanished.”

After Monday’s LaLiga match against Getafe at the Bernabéu, Madrid will visit Celta Vigo on Friday and face City at the Bernabéu in the Champions League round of 16 on March 11.

They will play Elche on March 14, followed by the second leg away in Manchester on March 17.

As they approach Monday’s match with Getafe, Madrid is positioned four points behind league leaders Barcelona, who secured a 4-1 victory over Villarreal on Saturday.
