Liam Rosenior stated that Chelsea were “fortunate” to achieve a 4-2 victory in the FA Cup fifth round against Wrexham after two significant VAR decisions went against the EFL Championship side during a tense match at Stok Cae Ras.

A red card issued to Wrexham midfielder George Dobson in the second half for a foul on Alejandro Garnacho and a disallowed goal by Lewis Brunt in extra time were both determined by VAR, which is being implemented from the fifth round onward in this season’s FA Cup.

If these events had occurred in earlier rounds, Dobson would not have received a red card, and Brunt’s goal would have been permitted.

While both VAR calls seemed to be accurate, Chelsea’s head coach Rosenior acknowledged that his team benefited from some luck to secure the win.

“Both VAR decisions were accurate,” Rosenior remarked.

“It was a perilous challenge [by Dobson], and if you are offside, you are offside.

“However, we required that bit of luck today because Wrexham performed exceptionally well.

“They were outstanding in their energy and their bravery in pressing.

“We had to perform at a very high level tonight because we were challenged by a strong team.

“Wrexham took risks. It’s a cup match, and you anticipate crosses into the box from wide positions.

“In these cup matches, the emotions are palpable, and they are challenging games to participate in.

“Many Premier League teams will experience this in this competition, but we now need to recover and prepare for a significant match on Wednesday [against Paris Saint-Germain].”

Chelsea’s victory was propelled by an impressive performance from Garnacho, who netted one goal and assisted another in his team’s triumph.

Rosenior commended the former Manchester United winger for his impactful performance.

“I believe he’s in a good position, he’s in a great place,” Rosenior noted.

“His goal was excellent, and his energy levels were remarkable considering he played a full 90 minutes on Wednesday.

“He’s in a very good place, and it’s encouraging to see him performing well at such a crucial time in the season.”
