Kylian Mbappé (knee) expected to miss Real Madrid match against Benfica – sources

Kylian Mbappé is not expected to be available for Real Madrid’s Champions League playoff second leg against Benfica as he continues to deal with a knee issue, sources have informed ESPN.
The prominent forward has experienced discomfort in his left knee over the past few months, most recently missing Madrid’s LaLiga match against Real Sociedad on February 14, and felt discomfort again during training on Tuesday.

The club’s medical staff has been attempting to manage the situation, and sources indicated to ESPN that there are uncertainties—shared by both the player and the medical team—regarding his participation in Wednesday’s vital playoff encounter.
Madrid secured a 1-0 victory in the first leg in Lisbon on February 17, with Mbappé playing the full match.
If Mbappé were to take part against Benfica, he would likely need a 10-day recovery period, sources noted.
The club does not believe that the France international would risk worsening his injury if he were to play, sources stated, but it remains painful, with Mbappé performing at approximately 60 to 70% of his capacity.
Following Wednesday’s match with Benfica, Madrid will host Getafe on March 2, and then travel to Celta Vigo on March 7.
Mbappé has been outstanding for Madrid this season, netting 23 goals in LaLiga and 13 in the Champions League.
His left knee had been a concern prior to Christmas, causing him to miss Madrid’s Champions League encounter with Manchester City on December 10, and in January, he managed to play only a few minutes in the Spanish Supercopa.
His movement seemed limited during Saturday’s 2-1 LaLiga loss at Osasuna.
“Kylian is ready to play tomorrow, which is the most crucial aspect at this moment,” coach Álvaro Arbeloa stated in a press conference on Tuesday. “I want to emphasize the dedication he’s demonstrating to the team and his teammates.
“He’s making an effort to assist us on the field. He’s a key player and can influence a match at any moment.”
