The 28-year-old is dealing with a knee issue, yet Milan’s reversal still comes as a surprise, leaving Mateta in a precarious position before the transfer window closes in England on Monday evening.

Juventus has also shown interest in Mateta, but it remains uncertain if they will pursue a transfer, while Nottingham Forest submitted a £35m ($47.8m) offer earlier in the window.
It is yet to be determined if this development will impact Palace’s £48m ($66m) agreement with Wolves for Jorgen Strand Larsen, who was anticipated to join Selhurst Park as Mateta’s successor.
