Inter Milan manager Cristian Chivu expressed confidence that his Italian players will swiftly recover following their nation’s unexpected loss in the World Cup playoff final against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Five players from Inter — Alessandro Bastoni, Francesco Pio Esposito, Federico Dimarco, Nicolò Barella, and Davide Frattesi — participated midweek when Italy was eliminated on penalties.

The four-time champions Italy have not qualified for the finals for the third consecutive tournament, with Bastoni receiving a red card and Esposito being one of two players to miss their penalties in the shootout.

Chivu, whose Serie A leaders aim to end a three-match winless streak in the league against Roma at San Siro on Sunday, told reporters: “There are many fans who support all of the players.

“I have champions in my squad. They possess excellent human qualities and the capability to recover.

“They have faced challenges, but they have always managed to bounce back. They understand that this is part of the game. Sometimes, you do not achieve your objectives.

“The essential thing is to recover and demonstrate character. We have the support of the fans. They recognize that setbacks are a part of the sport.

“I am not concerned, however. Since I took over, I have witnessed remarkable things. I coach exceptional individuals. I coach players with integrity.

“We are at the top of the league, we are competitive, and aligned with our objectives.”

Serie A’s leading scorer Lautaro Martínez is anticipated to provide Chivu with a boost by returning to the field after an extended injury absence.

The Argentine forward, who has netted 14 Serie A goals this season, has been sidelined for the last seven matches due to a calf injury.

Chivu stated: “On an individual level, everyone is crucial. Lautaro is one of them, as are others like Luis Henrique and Andy Diouf. We have everyone prepared to contribute.

“We are aware of Roma and what they bring to the table. Their coach has made a significant impact. He is performing very well. It is a vital match. There are eight games remaining, and the next one is the most critical.

“We need intensity. We must be prepared. It is never easy to face [Roma head coach Gian Piero] Gasperini. We require character on Sunday. We understand it will be challenging.”

Despite securing only two points from their last three matches, Inter maintains a six-point lead over their nearest rivals AC Milan at the top of the standings and remains unbeaten at home since late November.

Roma’s Champions League aspirations have diminished after winning just three of their last nine in Serie A, currently placing them sixth, eight points behind third-placed Napoli.
