Hugo Ekitike of Liverpool suffers Achilles injury, ruled out of World Cup - sources 1

Hugo Ekitike will be sidelined for at least nine months and will miss the World Cup after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon during the Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night, a source close to the France international informed ESPN.

The Liverpool forward was carried off the field on a stretcher, visibly upset, after only 22 minutes of the quarterfinal second leg at Anfield.

He reportedly heard his Achilles snap before falling to the ground in agony, according to the same source.

For this type of injury, the recovery period to return to play typically ranges from nine to 12 months.

Liverpool has not yet verified this information, but the injury to the French player represents a significant setback for the Reds as they strive for a top 5 finish in the Premier League and for France, where Ekitike was expected to participate in the World Cup this summer.

Arne Slot remarked on Tuesday night that “it doesn’t look good,” while Ibrahima KonatΓ© stated: “I think it is bad. I don’t know, I have heard many things, I have no words to express that because with the World Cup approaching, it is very, very difficult for him, and I send him my prayers.”

The club is already developing a plan for his surgery and subsequent rehabilitation process.

The former PSG striker joined the club last summer and made an immediate impact, scoring 17 goals and providing six assists across all competitions in his inaugural season at Liverpool.
