MANCHESTER, England — Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson may become players for Manchester City next season.
If they arrive at the City Football Academy during the summer, they might need to keep a low profile for a few days. Goals from the Nottingham Forest duo secured an unexpected 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, significantly impacting the title aspirations of their potential future teammates.
Alongside Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, the lead at the top has now extended to seven points. Gibbs-White and Anderson — both targets for City ahead of the upcoming transfer window — are unlikely to be concerned.

Forest is engaged in its own struggle at the opposite end of the table, and this crucial point keeps them just above the relegation zone. A lesser result would have seen them drop into the bottom three due to West Ham United’s 1-0 victory over Fulham.
The draw elicited contrasting responses from the two managers, Pep Guardiola and Vitor Pereira.
“Sometimes I speak, sometimes I don’t,” Guardiola remarked at the conclusion of a brief and pointed post-match press conference. “Today it is not necessary. Tomorrow we will see.”
Pereira, in contrast, was notably more positive after securing his first Premier League point since taking over from Sean Dyche. “It was a challenging match, but my team showed a lot of character,” he stated. “Quality, organization, and one day less [than City] to recover.”
“I’m pleased with my players. Fantastic goals, two fantastic goals. We demonstrated to ourselves that we can earn points anywhere.”
Despite City’s recent performances being strong, one could argue that a result like this was on the horizon. This is not a Guardiola side that can easily dominate opponents. The earlier fixture against Forest at the City Ground in December ended with a 2-1 victory for City. Their last two wins against Newcastle United and Leeds United were also decided by a single goal.
Nearly 40% of their Premier League wins this season have come by a one-goal margin. This represents Manchester City’s highest percentage of single-goal victories since the 2012-13 season, when it exceeded 50%.
When the margins are so narrow, it becomes challenging to consistently secure favorable outcomes, and against Forest, City faltered. They initially took the lead through Antoine Semenyo in the first half, only to be equalized by a moment of brilliant improvisation from Gibbs-White.
Ola Aina’s deep cross was headed back inside by Igor Jesus, and with limited options and Rúben Dias pressed against him, Gibbs-White back-heeled his finish past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
“He’s a special player,” Pereira commented.
“He possesses a lot of quality. He senses spaces and opportunities and scored a stunning goal. He has the character we need. He’s a fighter, and this is the spirit I want to see in my team.”
If that caught the attention of Hugo Viana — City’s director of football — then Anderson was determined to match it. After Rodri restored City’s lead to 2-1 with a header from Rayan Aït-Nouri’s corner, the England midfielder combined with Callum Hudson-Odoi for a neat one-two and curled his finish into the corner.
This was sufficient to ensure Forest avoided defeat in a league match at City for the first time in nearly three decades.
“Elliot, I thought maybe after 60 or 70 minutes I would need to substitute him because I didn’t believe he would have the energy to maintain the intensity we require here,” Pereira noted.
“But in the end, he surprised me; he had plenty of energy and quality until the final whistle.”
Anderson also contributed to a resilient defensive display from Forest, which thwarted City’s attempts to secure the points late in the match. City sought two penalties — one for a challenge by Matz Sels on Erling Haaland and another for an Anderson challenge on Rodri — but neither was awarded.
Savinho had a prime opportunity with the last kick of the game, only to see his attempt cleared off the line by Murillo. When asked afterward what his team could have improved, Guardiola responded succinctly: “Score goals.”
It should be more concerning for Guardiola that City has now dropped 13 points from winning positions this season. Since the beginning of the year, they have led against Chelsea, Brighton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Forest, yet have only secured four points from a possible 12.
With a game in hand and Arsenal set to visit the Etihad in April, Guardiola remains hopeful.
“There are still nine matches to play, and for them [Arsenal] one less now, and now it’s Newcastle [on Saturday],” he stated. “I always focus on what’s next, not dwelling too much.”
“Overall, we analyze, and it was a good performance — many, many positive aspects. Of course, there are areas where we can improve.”
Potential improvement in the summer may involve Gibbs-White and Anderson. Still in the red of Forest, they have disrupted City’s title challenge and, in doing so, enhanced their own prospects of remaining in the league.
