HAMBURG, Germany — French athlete Jean-Luc Dompé has received a six-figure penalty from his Bundesliga club due to drunk driving.

Hamburg SV announced in a statement that the 30-year-old winger has been issued a “record fine in the six-figure range” and expressed remorse during a meeting on Tuesday regarding his actions.

Dompé was apprehended during a traffic stop at the end of January, where law enforcement identified alcohol in a breath analysis. Consequently, the club has suspended him until further notice.

Hamburg indicated that he will remain out of action this week but is set to return to training.

“I recognize that a mere apology is insufficient,” Dompé stated in remarks released by the club. “I have completely failed to fulfill my responsibilities as a role model.

“I have made significant errors and, naturally, accept full accountability for the repercussions. I comprehend the disappointment of the club, the coaching staff, and all the supporters who have consistently backed me until now. I am deeply regretful – particularly for letting the team down during this critical period, these extremely important weeks.”

Hamburg, which returned to the Bundesliga last season after a seven-year hiatus, currently sits 13th in the 18-team league.
