Leeds United’s Lucas Perri emerged as the hero in the penalty shootout, despite facing challenges from Birmingham City.

The goalkeeper participated in the penalty shootout during the fourth-round FA Cup match on Sunday after reviewing a document that contained insights on where Birmingham’s players were likely to direct their shots.

However, he had to rely solely on his instincts as the Birmingham players approached the penalty spot, as he was unable to identify them.

“Unfortunately, for the first two penalties, it was hard for me to see since they don’t have their numbers on their shorts,” Perri explained to TNT Sports.

“And for the third one, we weren’t certain [where he would aim, so I relied on] instinct. I am pleased to assist the club.”

Perri saved Tommy Doyle’s attempt and then benefited from Patrick Roberts sending his shot over the bar.

Perri’s pre-shootout analysis indicated that Roberts would aim to the goalkeeper’s left, but this information proved irrelevant, while the TV cameras were unable to capture his notes for Doyle.

The Brazilian goalkeeper was brought in as Leeds’ new No. 1 following their promotion to the Premier League in the summer, but he has since lost his starting position.

Manager Daniel Farke criticized Perri for conceding the decisive goal in a thrilling 4-3 defeat to Newcastle United in January, leading to Karl Darlow taking his place.

Nonetheless, Perri was reinstated for the FA Cup and made a notable first-half save from Jay Stansfield before executing the crucial stop in the penalty shootout.

Lukas Nmecha’s goal was equalized by Roberts, resulting in the shootout after a 1-1 draw.

Sean Longstaff, who converted the winning penalty for Leeds, remarked: “Lucas was outstanding. He played a significant role in the shootout, but [also] throughout the entire match. He made two or three crucial saves.

“We managed to secure a result. It’s never straightforward in the FA Cup.

“Whenever you face a team from a lower division away, people expect an easy win, but that’s rarely the reality. They performed excellently.

“I am truly pleased for Lucas. It hasn’t been a difficult time for him, but it’s been a bit inconsistent.”

Perri added: “It’s always rewarding to have a strong performance. The most important confidence comes from within myself.

“It doesn’t hinge on the outcome, but of course, it’s gratifying to have a match like this. I hope to continue this momentum.”
