Benfica denounces 'smear campaign' against Gianluca Prestianni following allegations involving Vinícius Jr. 1

Benfica has denounced the “smear campaign” directed at their player Gianluca Prestianni following accusations that he racially insulted Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior.

Vinícius claimed that Prestianni racially abused him during the first leg of the UEFA Champions League playoff on Tuesday, prompting a 10-minute pause in the match during the second half.

On Wednesday, UEFA announced it would launch an investigation into the allegations.

The Portuguese club stated in a release that it will fully assist UEFA’s inquiry while defending Prestianni, who has denied any misconduct.

“The club clearly and unequivocally reaffirms its historic and uncompromising commitment to upholding the values of equality, respect, and inclusion, which align with the core principles of its foundation and are best represented by Eusébio,” the statement read.

“Benfica also reiterates its complete support and confidence in the account provided by player Gianluca Prestianni, whose behavior while representing the Club has consistently been characterized by respect for opponents, institutions, and the values that define Benfica’s identity.

“The club condemns the smear campaign to which the player has been subjected.”

Prestianni, 20, could face a potential 10-match suspension if found guilty of racial abuse under UEFA’s disciplinary regulations.

The Argentinian refuted Vinícius’ claims on social media, asserting that the Brazil international “misunderstood what he believes he heard.”

During the alleged incident, Prestianni was observed conversing with Vinícius while covering his mouth with his jersey, after which the Brazil international pointed at him and approached the referee.

Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé stated to Spanish TVE after Tuesday’s match that he and other players heard Prestianni say “that Vini is a monkey five times.”

Benfica contended that Madrid players could not have overheard the purported racist remarks due to the noise in the stadium and the distance separating the players.
