Barcelona seeks Lewandowski contract extension at reduced salary - sources 1

Barcelona is contemplating a contract extension for Robert Lewandowski to keep him at Camp Nou for at least one more season, but this would be contingent on a reduction in his salary, sources have informed ESPN.

The Polish captain will become a free agent this summer, leaving his future at Barça in a state of uncertainty.

According to sources, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick is pleased with Lewandowski’s demeanor and performances, which is why the club is exploring various options to retain the player until at least June 2027.

This summer, Barcelona’s main focus is to acquire a striker who can challenge Ferran Torres.

ESPN reported last month that Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez is still the preferred target of Barcelona president Joan Laporta, but the club is also considering other options such as Dusan Vlahovic, whose contract with Juventus concludes in June.

Barcelona is eager to have Lewandowski, who will turn 38 in August, take on a secondary role if he agrees to a pay cut.

A source indicated that Barcelona has not yet initiated discussions with Lewandowski, but Barça sporting director Deco and Flick plan to engage with the player soon to talk about his future, as the club believes he can still play a significant role in the locker room.

Lewandowski, who joined Camp Nou in 2022 from Bayern Munich, continues to be one of the highest earners at Barça.

By lowering Lewandowski’s salary, Barça would create financial flexibility to accommodate additional signings this summer.

Barcelona aims to bolster their defensive lineup with a center-back while also needing to decide whether to activate the purchase option for Marcus Rashford, who is currently on loan from Manchester United.

Lewandowski has netted 116 goals in 186 appearances for Barcelona and is reportedly being pursued by clubs in the Saudi Pro League and MLS.
