Ange Postecoglou has expressed regret over accepting the head coach position at Nottingham Forest this season, feeling it was “too soon” after his departure from Tottenham Hotspur.

Postecoglou was dismissed by Spurs last summer, despite having ended the club’s 17-year trophy drought by securing the Europa League title just weeks earlier.

He then faced a similar outcome at Forest, where he was released by owner Evangelos Marinakis following a 39-day winless streak earlier this season.

During an appearance on The Overlap podcast, Postecoglou reflected on his choice to take the role at the City Ground, acknowledging that it was poorly timed.

“The entire Forest situation was my responsibility. It was, I believe, a case of being cautious about what you wish for,” Postecoglou stated.

“It was a poor decision on my part to accept that position, and I must take responsibility for it. There’s no use in blaming timing or circumstances — I should not have taken the job. It was too soon after my time at Tottenham.

“I entered at a moment when they were accustomed to operating in a specific manner, and while I intended to implement changes, I must accept that. It was my error. No one else is to blame.

“This was the first time in over 20 years that I hadn’t been employed, and I felt disoriented. Typically, during the off-season, you’re occupied with transfers and preseason, and your mind is always engaged. This time, I wasn’t, and I felt adrift.”

Forest has since appointed two new managers, with Vitor Pereira taking over from Sean Dyche, marking the club’s fourth permanent manager this season, a record in the Premier League.

Amid the ongoing managerial changes, Forest currently sits just three points above the relegation zone, a notable underachievement given the quality of the squad, with Postecoglou commenting on the uncertainty he encountered.

“Generally, when you join a club, there is a desire for change. However, the truth is, I don’t think they genuinely wanted what I had to offer,” he remarked.

“I don’t even believe they were keen on interviewing me. Something must have transpired behind the scenes, as after the previous season, they would not typically have pursued me.

“Thus, you are not entering a standard environment where everyone is eager for change. I observed a group of players and thought I could quickly turn things around. However, strategically, it was never going to be feasible.

“By the time we began playing competitive matches, we never gained momentum. It’s understandable that the supporters did not connect with me. Even the players seemed somewhat distant.”

Postecoglou was ultimately dismissed by Forest just 19 minutes after suffering a fourth consecutive defeat against Chelsea, and he believes he should have engaged in more “extensive discussions” prior to accepting the position.

“Ultimately, I must take responsibility. I made a choice based on not being employed and seeing a group of players I thought I could enhance. That blinded me to the reality — it was never going to be a long-term solution,” Postecoglou added.

“Even if I had secured a few victories, it wouldn’t have been sustainable.

“And the owner [Marinakis] simply wants to win — regardless of how that occurs. You can say what you like about him, but they likely wouldn’t even be in the Premier League without him. However, he demands immediate results.

“Yet every manager must navigate through challenging periods. That’s how you learn about individuals — players, staff, fans. You need to experience it. At Spurs, we went through that tough phase and reaped the rewards. I had those players fully engaged after that.

“In hindsight, I don’t know what I was thinking. I should have had more thorough discussions before accepting the position. But I’ve always been the type to say: Get me in there and I’ll demonstrate my capabilities.”
