Achilles injury sidelines Mexico goalkeeper Malagón from World Cup participation.

Club América has reported that Luis Ángel Malagón, the goalkeeper for the Mexico national team, sustained an Achilles tear during Tuesday’s Concacaf Champions Cup victory against the Philadelphia Union. This non-contact injury necessitates surgery and will prevent him from participating in the World Cup.
“Medical examinations conducted on Luis Ángel Malagón indicate a rupture of the Achilles tendon,” the Liga MX club announced on Wednesday. “Our goalkeeper will require surgical intervention. The duration of his recovery will depend on his healing process.”
Malagón fell to the ground in distress during the first half of the 1-0 victory over the Union after incurring a non-contact injury to his left foot. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and substituted in the 42nd minute by backup Rodolfo Cota.
The Club América player had been a regular member of Javier Aguirre’s Mexico squads and had emerged as the leading candidate to start in goal for the national team in the 2026 World Cup.
“I feel hurt, sad, and as if my soul is in pieces. I am trying to comprehend it all and asking, ‘Why?'” the 29-year-old goalkeeper expressed on Instagram shortly after the injury.
“There are moments in life that are difficult to grasp, particularly when you have consistently acted with integrity. Today, with a heavy heart, I want to express my gratitude to everyone and my teammates for their supportive messages and prayers,” Malagón continued.
With Malagón unavailable, Chivas goalkeeper Raúl “Tala” Rangel seems to have a slight advantage for the No. 1 position for Mexico in the World Cup. Other candidates for the starting role include Santos Laguna’s Carlos Acevedo and the 40-year-old veteran Guillermo Ochoa.
For Club América, Cota is now poised to take over as the starting goalkeeper for the Mexico City team, which will face Mazatlan at home in Liga MX action this Sunday, followed by a home match against the Union on March 18 in the second leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup round of 16 series.
