MEXICO CITY — Aaliyah Farmer, an American-born player, requested to be released from her team in Mexico’s premier women’s soccer league after just one year due to experiencing harassment in the country, UANL Tigres coach Pedro Losa stated on Wednesday.

Losa did not elaborate on the specific nature of the harassment that Farmer reported. The 22-year-old, who was born in California and has Mexican heritage, represents the national team. She was released earlier this week and has signed a three-year deal with the Chicago Stars in the National Women’s Soccer League.

“There was a critical point in her situation. She did not feel secure due to the harassment she encountered, and she communicated that to us,” Losa mentioned during a press conference. “As a club, it was our duty to support her.”

Farmer is the most recent American-born athlete to depart Liga MX Femenil after alleging experiences of harassment. In October 2024, Lucia Yáñez left her position with Puebla and chose to return to Los Angeles, her birthplace.

Yáñez, who currently plays for FAS in El Salvador, reported that individuals threw rocks at her residence and harassed her during games.

Scarlett Camberos exited Mexico in 2023 and joined Angel City FC in Los Angeles after enduring online harassment for over a year. She returned to the Mexican league a year later and has since been competing for Club America.

Players from other countries in the league have also reported instances of harassment.

“I want to raise awareness. Every day, female athletes and women in society experience similar feelings, both on social media and in various contexts,” Losa stated. “No woman should ever feel threatened, mistreated, or harassed.”

Farmer, who played four seasons at Southern California and secured a Big Ten title in 2024, commenced her professional journey in 2025 with Tigres. She participated in 24 matches, starting 20 of them, and achieved victory in the Apertura tournament championship in December. She made her debut for the Mexican national team in May 2025 and has played eight matches since then.
