Women's junior flyweight boxer Isis Sio emerges from coma, remains in ICU 1

Women’s junior flyweight boxer Isis Sio, who was hospitalized following a knockout by Jocelyn Camarillo on Saturday in San Bernardino, California, has emerged from her medically induced coma.

Sio is no longer on a ventilator but continues to be treated in the intensive care unit at the Loma Linda University Health medical center, according to a statement from her family and team shared with ESPN.

“Isis is a dedicated, disciplined, and well-prepared athlete who thoughtfully assesses each opportunity presented to her,” the statement noted. “Her choice to compete on Saturday, March 21, against Jocelyn Camarillo was made after careful consideration and analysis prior to her acceptance.”

Sio, 19, entered the bout against the undefeated Camarillo with a record of 1-2 and was coming off a knockout loss from a body punch in January.

Camarillo, who had not previously achieved a knockout in her professional career, delivered a series of head punches in the first round that rendered Sio unconscious just over a minute into the match. Sio was taken out of the arena on a stretcher and was observed convulsing.

“Currently, Isis remains in ICU, but she is off the ventilator and we are optimistic about her recovery,” the statement from Monday indicated. “We are awaiting additional updates from her medical team. She is presently under the care of three specialized medical divisions who are closely monitoring her status.”

“We genuinely appreciate the ongoing support, thoughts, and prayers during this period.”
