Jazza Dickens, once residing in his van in Dublin, now stands as the world champion.

Jazza Dickens once resided in his van outside the venue where he will defend his world title this weekend.
The British boxer has taken a challenging path to reach the pinnacle of his career, turning professional in 2011 and ultimately becoming world champion in 2025 when he was promoted from interim status.
He is now set to defend his WBA junior lightweight title for the first time against Anthony Cacace from Belfast on Saturday.
Dublin, the location of the upcoming fight, is a city with which Dickens has a deep connection, having spent several years there while living in his van.
ESPN interviewed him in advance of the title bout.

What are your recollections of living in Dublin, and is it true that you slept in your van outside the 3Arena at one time?
“I lived there for a few years,” Dickens stated. “I have a great affection for that place, so it’s thrilling to return to Dublin for fight week.
“During my time in the van, I spent three years there. I was traveling back and forth, but it totaled three years.
“Every night was tough, but every morning was wonderful because I got to meet the people of Dublin, friends I’ve made for life.”
Now that you are a world champion, do you look back on those times with fondness?
“Yes, there was another period when I was at the Fifth Street Gym [in Miami] with [Luis Perez] and Dino Spencer,” Dickens remarked.
“I was staying in hostels during that time, so it was quite similar!
“I truly enjoy the grind of it. And sometimes when I have a little money, I find myself thinking: ‘I miss the good old days.’
Given all that you have experienced, where does your optimistic outlook originate?
“It’s a combination of various factors,” Dickens explained. “I believe it’s a very intricate answer because it encompasses all those elements and more, but there is also a significant amount of childhood trauma I endured.
“So it’s just a blend of everything. It’s the best life I could have chosen.
“I feel fortunate every day just to rise and continue pursuing my dreams as a boxer.”
The world title took a long time to achieve; have you taken a moment to reflect on your journey?
“There has never been a time for reflection in my life because I enjoy it so much,” Dickens noted.
“I am still on that journey now, and I think it’s crucial to have love surrounding me, a solid team. I’ve had the same family, friends, and [partner] since I began, since the outset of my professional career.
“I am very fortunate and lucky to have them. And it’s revealing to discover who truly cares for you when you face loss.”
