Ellie Scotney improves to 11-0 after winning by decision against Mayelli Flores.
LONDON — Ellie Scotney was named the undisputed junior featherweight champion on Sunday after securing a points victory over Mayelli Flores in a fight that could be considered a contender for fight of the year.
Scotney (11-0), who held the WBO, IBF, and WBC titles, triumphed over Flores by unanimous decision, claiming the Mexican’s WBA belt and becoming Britain’s youngest undisputed champion, regardless of gender, at the age of 28.
The judges scored the match 96-94, 100-90, and 100-90.
“I can’t express how challenging that fight was. I believe the score [didn’t] reflect her performance,” Scotney stated in the ring. “She was relentless from the first bell. And when I say I faced numerous challenges just to be here today, only God helped me through. Only God.”
The initial rounds unfolded at a rapid pace, with Flores (13-1-1, 4 KOs) advancing aggressively from the start in an effort to prevent Scotney from establishing any rhythm or momentum, successfully landing shots from various angles to disrupt the London-born fighter. The two exchanged punches throughout much of the bout, but by Round 4, Scotney began to assert some control, utilizing her jab effectively and evading Flores’ most significant punches while building combinations.
Nonetheless, Flores remained undeterred and continued to press forward, attempting to engage Scotney in a brawl, much to the enjoyment of the fans in attendance who were captivated by every moment of the match.
Scotney maintained her composure and distanced herself as the fight progressed, delivering cleaner shots while Flores had a higher output but was unable to inflict any damage on Scotney. In Round 8, Scotney took charge, landing two powerful right hands that shook Flores. In the final two rounds, Scotney moved adeptly, worked behind her jab, and ensured she made no errors as she secured a noteworthy victory.
Earlier, Chantelle Cameron claimed the vacant WBO junior middleweight title with a decisive unanimous points victory over Michaela Kotaskova.
The judges scored the bout 100-90, 99-91, and 99-91, all in favor of Cameron (22-1, 8 KOs), who was dominant from the outset, targeting the body of her taller opponent and overwhelming Kotaskova.
Cameron, 34, becomes a two-weight world champion after previously holding the undisputed junior welterweight titles. The Brit showcased her physicality despite being the smaller fighter, and while Kotaskova displayed determination and continued to throw punches, they lacked power.
Competing over the longer three-minute rounds, Cameron’s work rate remained high, and her fitness proved crucial, varying her combinations to leave her opponent on unsteady legs multiple times.
Following the fight, Mikaela Mayer joined Cameron for a post-fight interview, and the two expressed their intention to face each other next.
They confronted each other in the ring, and although a fight has not yet been finalized, both asserted that it would be straightforward to arrange since they are both signed with Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions.
