WASHINGTON — Washington Wizards general manager Will Dawkins stated on Sunday that he anticipates Anthony Davis will make a return to the court this season, although a clearer timeline is expected to emerge during the All-Star break.

Dawkins’ comments followed a report from The Athletic, which indicated that the Wizards were likely to sideline the injured 10-time All-Star forward for the rest of the season, according to an unnamed league source.

Washington acquired Davis — who has been recuperating from a sprained finger on his non-dominant hand since January 8 — just before Thursday’s trade deadline as part of an eight-player transaction with Dallas. His initial recovery timeline was projected to be six weeks.

“The current plan for AD is to return to Dallas and continue his rehabilitation,” Dawkins mentioned. “During the All-Star break, he will have another appointment with a doctor. This is a significant meeting for us to assess his progress.”

The Wizards (14-37) entered Sunday’s matchup against Miami in second-to-last place in the Eastern Conference, but they are looking forward to a potentially more competitive roster for the upcoming season.

Washington also brought in four-time All-Star Trae Young from Atlanta in January. Despite these acquisitions, they have maintained most of their young core, which features second-year forward Alex Sarr and rookie guard Tre Johnson.

Young has been sidelined due to a sprained knee and will also be evaluated during the break, according to Dawkins.

“He is still engaging in on-court activities,” Dawkins noted. “He has begun doing individual drills and has started participating in some 2-on-2 exercises. … He is progressing positively.”
