Warriors deal Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield to Hawks in exchange for Kristaps Porzingis

The Golden State Warriors are sending Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Kristaps Porzingis, sources informed ESPN’s Shams Charania on Wednesday.
Additionally, the Warriors have traded center Trayce Jackson-Davis to the Toronto Raptors for a second-round pick in 2026, which is owned by the Los Angeles Lakers, according to sources.
Kuminga’s tenure with the Warriors concludes after 4½ challenging seasons during which the 23-year-old forward frequently fell out of Steve Kerr’s rotation. Selected with the No. 7 pick in 2021, Kuminga showcased his potential as an athletic wing at various points in his career but struggled to integrate with the team’s dynamics on the court, especially following the acquisition of Jimmy Butler last season.
Following a difficult negotiation this past summer, Kuminga signed a two-year contract with a team option for $24 million for the next season, which rendered him ineligible for trade until January 15.
Kuminga started the initial 12 games of the season, but after the Warriors encountered a rough patch, he was benched and subsequently fell out of the rotation entirely after 13 games. He regained playing time following Butler’s season-ending injury but was then sidelined himself due to a knee issue.
Porzingis began the season strongly, averaging 19.2 points over his first 13 games with the Hawks, who acquired the Latvian center in a trade with the Boston Celtics during the offseason.
However, his season was interrupted by what the Hawks described as an illness that kept him out for most of December. While with the Celtics last season, Porzingis was diagnosed with a disorder affecting the autonomic nervous system known as POTS, which significantly hindered his performance in the playoffs.
Porzingis stated that his medical team discovered ways to manage his health over the summer and that he started the season feeling well. He returned from a month-long absence on December 31 but participated in only four games before being sidelined again for several weeks. He has not played since January 7.
When in good health, Porzingis is regarded as a top-tier stretch-five and, standing at an impressive 7-foot-2, is also among the league’s premier rim protectors. He is currently on an expiring contract and is poised to enter free agency this summer.
Kuminga holds career averages of 12.5 points and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 50% from the field.
