Steve Kerr and Doc Rivers sign letter addressing ‘political interference’ issues

A group of notable basketball coaches, including NBA champions Steve Kerr and Doc Rivers, endorsed a public letter issued on Wednesday asserting that political interference in universities poses a threat to the integrity of college athletics.
“College sports bring us together as a nation, fostering team spirit and shared principles of fair play,” the letter stated. “Campuses—large and small, public and private, two-year and four-year—serve as a fundamental foundation for the role sports play in American society. Safeguarding university autonomy preserves this esteemed tradition.”
Kerr and Rivers are joined in endorsing the letter by former coaches Jim Boeheim and Muffet McGraw (both of whom have secured NCAA basketball championships), former Michigan coach John Beilein, Harvard coach and former Duke All-American Tommy Amaker, and Phil Martelli, who led consistent NCAA tournament teams at St. Joseph’s. Yale’s head men’s basketball coach James Jones and Judith Sweet, the first woman elected as president of the NCAA, are also among the signatories.
The coaches and other athletic administrators who endorsed the letter expressed that political interference negatively impacts university culture, including college athletics. They cited examples such as reductions in funding for research, censorship, intimidation of university leaders and faculty, and the deployment of federal officers to college campuses as manifestations of that interference.
<p"Currently, at both federal and state levels, instances of political interference jeopardize the autonomy of our colleges and universities," the letter indicated.
The letter calls on leaders and supporters of college sports to encourage elected officials to uphold academic independence.
“When students fear expressing their opinions, they cannot perform at their best,” the coaches articulated. “When campuses are divided, it becomes challenging to uphold the ‘one team’ spirit we cultivate in the locker room. Unprecedented political pressure on colleges and universities undermines the values we aim to instill in student-athletes.”
The letter is available on the website of Stand For Campus Freedom, an organization that identifies itself as a nonpartisan initiative “that holds universities accountable to their highest ideals, resists political coercion, and enhances America’s leadership on the global stage.”
