NBA coaching changes: Dismissals, appointments, and future prospects for every position 1

The NBA coaching landscape has been relatively stable, with the New Orleans Pelicans (Willie Green in November) and the Milwaukee Bucks (Doc Rivers on Sunday) being the only teams to make changes thus far.

However, with additional coaching vacancies anticipated, let’s take a closer look at the current openings, the advantages and disadvantages of each role, and potential candidates for this offseason.

NBA coaching changes: Dismissals, appointments, and future prospects for every position 3Milwaukee Bucks

2025-26 record: 32-50
Previous coach: Doc Rivers
Lead executive: Jon Horst (hired June 2017)

Reason for vacancy: As the season unraveled, with Giannis Antetokounmpo sidelined due to injuries and the team heading towards the lottery for the first time in a decade, it became evident that Rivers, who was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame, was likely to depart. It is uncertain who else from the organization may leave, but this franchise could undergo significant changes by the start of the 2026-27 training camp in September.

Advantages of the position: If Antetokounmpo remains with the Bucks next season, having one of the top players in the league to build around is a considerable asset. Conversely, if he is traded, it could lead to a complete overhaul of Milwaukee’s roster and assets, providing a new coach with exciting possibilities. Some favorable lottery outcomes next month would certainly be beneficial.

Disadvantages of the position: The Bucks face a challenging path ahead. With $20 million from waiving and stretching Damian Lillard’s contract impacting the books for the next four years, along with limited draft capital due to the trade for him, acquiring impactful players will be a struggle. If Antetokounmpo is not traded, it is unlikely the Bucks will perform significantly better next year amidst ongoing uncertainties.

NBA coaching changes: Dismissals, appointments, and future prospects for every position 4New Orleans Pelicans

2025-26 record: 26-56
Previous coach: Willie Green (Fired Nov. 15; James Borrego named interim coach)
Lead executive: Joe Dumars (hired April 2025)

Reason for vacancy: It was widely known that New Orleans intended to replace Green. Borrego’s extended audition demonstrated his capability to still be an NBA head coach, managing to secure victories with this roster as the season progressedβ€”especially with the return of some injured veterans. However, substantial work lies ahead for New Orleans.

Advantages of the position: There is notable talent within the team. Zion Williamson is coming off what may be his best and most available season. Trey Murphy III and Herb Jones are solid two-way players.

Disadvantages of the position: Concerns exist regarding the ownership’s insufficient financial commitment to the franchise, with ongoing discussions about necessary investments in the team’s arena. The decision to trade a 2026 lottery pick, along with a first-round pick from last season, for Derik Queen has been scrutinized as he fell out of the starting lineup towards the end of the season. Additionally, significant financial commitments remain for next season with Jordan Poole and for the next two seasons with Dejounte Murray, both of whom may not be ideal fits. Re-establishing this team in a playoff position in the West will be a challenging task.
