Jeremy Sochan released by Spurs, now a free agent

The San Antonio Spurs released Jeremy Sochan on Wednesday, enabling the 2023 All-Rookie team forward to enter free agency.
Sochan is anticipated to evaluate offers from several interested teams after both parties engaged in trade discussions at the deadline that ultimately did not result in a deal, sources informed ESPN’s Shams Charania. The ninth overall selection in the 2022 NBA Draft, Sochan has exceeded five minutes of play in a game only twice since January 7.
“I won’t pretend it was all smooth sailing,” Sochan stated. “There have been times when it’s been quite challenging. I’ve been in the league for four years, and this is the first instance where I’ve faced this situation. I can come up with numerous excuses and reasons. However, it’s crucial for me to remember who I am at the end of the day.”
“Even when the light seems out of reach, I believe that if you keep pushing and focus your efforts and mindset positively, you will eventually find it.”
Sochan, 22, had lost his place in San Antonio’s rotation, partly due to the rise of rookie forward Carter Bryant, who was selected No. 14 in 2025. Sochan provided strong defensive support for the Spurs when needed, but Bryant has shown greater potential as a two-way player, having shot 40% from beyond the arc in his last two games, along with recording a steal and three blocks.
Bryant’s swift development left San Antonio without sufficient minutes for Sochan to make a consistent impact. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson praised Sochan prior to Tuesday’s win against the Los Angeles Lakers for his professionalism during a challenging period.
“He has been tasked with being a defensive disruptor and a versatile offensive asset for us, and that hasn’t changed,” Johnson remarked. “I know Jeremy desires more playing time, similar to many others who are not seeing as much action, and I appreciate that he feels that way. That competitive spirit is essential for success in this league.”
“Currently, he has not been part of the rotation, and that is a decision I have made. I expect Jeremy to continue to show up every day, maintain his professionalism, and be an excellent teammate. He has done just that, and that is what is required in this league. Sometimes, opportunities arise from unexpected places or at unforeseen times.”
Sochan expressed a desire to be in a situation where he could play immediately, according to sources.
In 28 games this season, Sochan has averaged 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and one assist while shooting 47.5% from the field. During Victor Wembanyama’s rookie season, the Spurs experimented with Sochan at point guard, where he achieved a performance of 31 points and 14 rebounds.
“Reflecting on my entire life, I’ve been on the move constantly,” Sochan noted. “I left home at 15, and this is the first time I’ve stayed in one place for more than a year since then. Now, it’s been four years. I feel like I’ve invested a lot of effort and dedication into this city. I will channel all of that into wherever I go next.”
