Anthony Davis aims to assist Wizards in ‘contending’ for next season

WASHINGTON — The long-term prospects of Anthony Davis with the Washington Wizards remain uncertain, yet the star player is assured of his commitment to the franchise for at least one more season.
Davis expressed positive sentiments on Monday regarding his teammates with the Wizards, emphasizing his belief that the team possesses the necessary talent to develop into a competitive unit.
“When the trade occurred and I arrived here, I’ve stated that this place is not as it is often portrayed,” Davis remarked. “It reflects well on the organization, the coaching staff, the players, and everyone involved. I want to enjoy my time where I am. I want to compete where I am. I want to learn wherever I am — and this organization provides that.”
The Wizards finished the 2025-26 season with a record of 17-65, marking the worst performance in the NBA and their third consecutive season with over 64 losses.
During the season-ending press conference, when questioned about his future in Washington, he humorously noted that he clearly intends to play for the Wizards next season.
“Yeah, I’m under contract,” he said with a chuckle. “I appreciate my salary.”
The Wizards obtained Davis from Dallas in an eight-player trade in February, shortly after acquiring high-scoring guard Trae Young from Atlanta.
Davis, 33, mentioned on Monday that he is interested in Washington’s young core of players and the foundation established by the front office.
Davis has been recuperating from a sprained finger on his non-shooting hand since January 8. He also indicated that he plans to meet with Wizards management soon to discuss his future and the organization’s strategy for constructing a contender.
“They are aware that I want to win,” he stated. “I’m certain they want to win as well. Nobody desires to lose. … I recognize we have many young players, but as I mentioned regarding the young players — their talent is significant. Adding Trae and myself could help facilitate that change.
“However, I also realize I’ve been in this league for a long time. I’ve experienced losing teams, and transitioning from a losing team to a championship contender is quite challenging.”
