Sixers star Joel Embiid has been released from a Houston hospital and is returning to Philadelphia, with the team announcing on Friday that there is no established timeline for his return to play.

Embiid underwent emergency surgery on Thursday following a diagnosis of appendicitis. The 76ers indicated that Embiid’s recovery will be overseen by team doctors and his surgeon.

In Embiid’s absence, the 76ers fell to the Rockets 113-102 on Thursday and currently occupy eighth place in the Eastern Conference with two games remaining (at Pacers on Friday, vs. Bucks on Sunday).

Depending on the 76ers’ outcomes and other match results, Philadelphia could still secure a playoff spot as the No. 6 seed or drop to No. 10 for the play-in, which starts on Tuesday.

Sixers coach Nick Nurse mentioned on Thursday that Embiid felt well during practice on Wednesday before his condition deteriorated overnight.

“It is a tough blow,” Nurse stated. “I think that the most important thing right now is that Joel comes out of the surgery as well as possible and that everything goes smoothly. That’s where most of my thoughts are at this moment.”

Embiid, 32, is averaging 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds over 38 games this season.
