Eala's Path to Career-High Ranking and Australian Open Boost

Alex Eala’s 2026 campaign will be remembered for a long time, and it is not yet complete.

She has only one tournament remaining, where she will compete at the Hong Kong Open as the second seed and strong favorite to make a deep run.

Although she appears to have nothing left to play for and cannot qualify for the WTA Finals, this is not entirely accurate.

In fact, the greatest advantage from this year may still be ahead if she can achieve a deep enough run to secure a new career-high ranking.

Alexandra Eala has recently reached a new career-high ranking.

Alexandra Eala has actually already attained a new career-high on the WTA rankings, though only because of Amanda Anisimova’s injury.

The American has already concluded her 2026 season and has forfeited all the points she earned at this time last year.

This has caused her to drop to 22nd in the live rankings, allowing Eala to climb to 17th.

There may still be room for further improvement, and she only needs to reach the Hong Kong semi-finals next week to do so.

The Filipino star faces a difficult first-round match against Alycia Parks and therefore requires just three victories to guarantee this rise.

If Eala achieves this and rises to 16th, she would secure her position as a top-16 seed at the Australian Open in January. This would mean she could only potentially face any of the world’s top eight players in the fourth round, hopefully enhancing her chances of a deep run.

Who are the current top eight on the WTA rankings?

The rankings could still change significantly before then, with WTA events at the start of the 2027 season and the WTA Finals still to be played this year.

However, at this moment, there is a fairly clear indication of who this would mean Eala would avoid in Melbourne.

Elena Rybakina is unlikely to be dethroned as the world number one, although Aryna Sabalenka, in second place, will try her best.

Current WTA live rankings

Mirra Andreeva, currently at a career-high ranking of third, is not far behind.

Just 700 points separate Coco Gauff and Elina Svitolina in fourth and sixth, with Jessica Pegula positioned between them.

The Czech pair of Karolína Muchová and Linda Nosková complete the top eight, with Iga Swiatek and Marta Kostyuk just outside.
