Italy triumphed over England for the first time in history on Saturday during a memorable afternoon in Rome.
This defeat marked England’s third consecutive loss, following setbacks against Scotland and Ireland, leaving their Six Nations campaign in disarray as the final week approaches.
Review ESPN’s player ratings following Italy’s 23-18 victory.

1. Ellis Genge – 6
Did not appear to be at his formidable best. Engaged in a tough contest with a strong Italian scrum for most of the match but lacked the desired impact with the ball.
2. Jamie George 6.5
Stabilized the lineout after the match against Ireland. Currently England’s most reliable option at hooker. Performed adequately during scrums as well.
3. Joe Heyes – 5.5
Faced pressure at the scrum but managed to cope. Struggled to find a consistent rhythm but contributed enough to challenge a robust Italian side.
4. Maro Itoje – 6
The captain appeared to regain his form after a couple of less impactful weeks, displaying increased energy and stepping up when required. He was aggressive at the breakdown, but his yellow card created a significant gap in the team, allowing Italy to score during his absence.
5. Alex Coles – 6
Had a chance to demonstrate his abilities with Ollie Chessum sidelined but did not fully seize the moment. England missed Chessum’s physical presence.
6. Guy Pepper – 6
Showed strength with the ball and executed the fundamentals effectively. Carried with purpose and fulfilled most defensive responsibilities.
7. Sam Underhill – 6.5
Performed admirably considering the late call-up due to Tom Curry’s injury during warm-ups. He was tenacious at the breakdown and created significant challenges for his opponents. However, his yellow card marked a turning point for England.
8. Ben Earl – 7
Has a strong argument for being England’s top performer and certainly the most consistent throughout the tournament. He sets the standard for much of England’s effective play but did not make a substantial impact in attack.
9. Ben Spencer – 7
Started off well, with his kicking being precise. Collaborated effectively with Fin Smith. Given an opportunity due to Alex Mitchell’s injury and performed competently.
10. Fin Smith – 6.5
Directed the attack effectively in the early stages, executing the basics well. When he connected with Spencer, England’s offense showed more fluidity than in recent matches, but it diminished later in the game.
11. Cadan Murley 7.5
Excelled under high balls, and his speed posed problems for Italy’s defense. Earned his opportunity and made the most of it, though he was unable to score a try.
12. Seb Atkinson – 5
Had a reasonable first half but struggled against his counterpart, Tommaso Menoncello, who is currently one of the top centers globally. Did not do enough to secure his position moving forward.
13. Tommy Freeman – 6
The scrutiny regarding Freeman’s position at 13 will intensify following this match. He has potential when he gets going, but is he more effective on the wing?
14. Tom Roebuck 6.5
Carried well and performed adequately in the air but saw limited involvement as the match progressed. Finished his try effectively.
15. Elliot Daly – 6
Kicked well at times, providing valuable experience in the revamped backline, but lacked the spark needed to energize England’s attack. Appeared to lag behind the pace as the match wore on.
