Irish Rugby Football Union probes ‘cowardly’ racial harassment directed at Edwin Edogbo.

The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) is looking into “cowardly” racist harassment aimed at Edwin Edogbo following his debut on the international stage.
Munster lock Edogbo faced online abuse after he came on as a substitute in Saturday’s 20-13 Six Nations win over Italy in Dublin.
The 23-year-old was born and raised in Cobh, County Cork, to Nigerian parents.
Messages on the IRFU’s X and Instagram platforms celebrating Edogbo’s first cap received numerous racist remarks.
In a statement issued to Press Association Sport, an IRFU representative stated: “We are aware of some targeted online abuse in recent days and are continuing to collaborate with Signify [a data technology firm specializing in online abuse protection] and the appropriate authorities to report it.
“We will also persist in fully supporting all those affected by the cowardly actions of a minority, and investigations are currently underway with our partners at Signify.
“It is evident that racist abuse has no place in Irish society, and the IRFU maintains a zero tolerance policy towards any form of racism.”
Edogbo played the last 10 minutes against Italy after replacing James Ryan.
He received a warm reception from the Aviva Stadium audience before assisting Andy Farrell’s team in securing victory during a tense conclusion.
“I think my primary objective with this campaign — I’ve had a few opportunities with Faz (Farrell) and several discussions with Paulie (forwards coach Paul O’Connell) – I just want to absorb as much knowledge as possible,” Edogbo remarked.
“Naturally, every player aspires to participate in every match, but I recognize that this is a very special environment, a significant privilege to be in, and it requires time.
“I believe Faz mentioned in an interview that I need to acclimate, and he is absolutely correct; there is an aspect of understanding the system, knowing your teammates, and ultimately, international rugby is a different challenge.
“I suppose I experienced a glimpse of that, and I realize from that brief period I had, there is much work ahead, and I am eager for it.”
Ireland will continue their Six Nations journey on Saturday against England at Twickenham.
The squad trained on Monday, with the medical team indicating no new injury issues from the Italy match.
