England skipper Maro Itoje labels Sir Jim Ratcliffe's remarks on immigration as 'absurd' 1

EDINBURGH — England’s captain Maro Itoje has described Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s remarks regarding immigration as “ridiculous.”

Manchester United co-owner Ratcliffe faced significant backlash this week after stating that the U.K. had been “colonised” by immigrants. He has since expressed regret for his comments.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and the Manchester United Muslim Supporters Club (MUMSC) were among those who criticized Ratcliffe for his statements. Itoje, who was born in London and has Nigerian roots, acknowledged Ratcliffe’s apology but asserted that his comments are “so far from the truth.”

“Clearly, I do not support the language he employed. I believe, if I have interpreted correctly, he has apologized for his remarks,” Itoje stated.

“Naturally, I am of Nigerian descent, born in this country but of Nigerian heritage … I find it absurd to claim that Great Britain has been colonised by immigrants.

“That is so far from the truth. I believe it is incorrect.”

The England captain further remarked to the BBC: “I disagree with the terminology and the sentiments expressed in his comments. I do not think that Great Britain has been colonised by immigrants. I consider that to be inaccurate and a misguided statement.

“I think it is commendable when individuals recognize their mistakes, so I commend him for that, but I certainly do not endorse the sentiments or the message conveyed by those words.”

Ratcliffe has stated he regrets if he “offended some people” with his comments: “I apologize that my choice of words has upset some individuals in the UK and Europe and raised concerns, but it is crucial to address the topic of controlled and well-managed immigration that fosters economic growth.

“My remarks were made in response to inquiries about UK policy at the European Industry Summit in Antwerp, where I was discussing the significance of economic growth, employment, skills, and manufacturing in the UK.”
