Wolff: Rivalry between George Russell and Kimi Antonelli will steer clear of the toxicity seen in Hamilton vs. Rosberg 1

Toto Wolff expresses confidence that Mercedes will not experience a recurrence of Lewis Hamilton’s contentious rivalry with Nico Rosberg, especially with Kimi Antonelli emerging as a significant contender to teammate George Russell’s championship aspirations.

The teenager Antonelli secured his first victory at the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday, just a week after Russell triumphed in the season opener in Australia. Russell currently leads Antonelli by four points, with Mercedes showing strong performance.

The relationship between Hamilton and Rosberg became strained during their three-year title battle, creating a tense environment within the Mercedes team.

Nevertheless, team principal Wolff is optimistic that the relationship between Russell, 28, and Antonelli, 19—both of whom have progressed through the Mercedes junior program—will remain positive.

“The dynamic between Lewis and Nico was entirely different,” Wolff remarked. “Nico and Lewis were acquainted from their early karting days, sharing a friendship that also included an underlying competitive tension. It evolved from friendship to rivalry, and ultimately to hostility.

“They were distinct drivers. However, it is important to recognize that drivers are here to win races and championships, and once they sense that opportunity, they will naturally become more aggressive. That is something the team must oversee.

“Both Kimi and George are products of the Mercedes junior program, and we have guided their development since their time in single-seaters. Therefore, I believe at this point—though I may regret saying this later—that we are in a completely different scenario.”
