Lando Norris: George Russell 'excited' about his status as F1 championship frontrunner 1

Current world champion Lando Norris has remarked that his longtime friend George Russell is “giddy” with enthusiasm about being the frontrunner for the 2026 Formula 1 season.

This is reminiscent of Norris’s position a year ago, as the McLaren driver ultimately fulfilled that expectation by securing his first F1 championship at the concluding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Mercedes’ new initiative for 2026 has been anticipated for some time, and its impressive showing at the Barcelona ‘Shakedown’ further solidified the optimism surrounding its prospects.

Norris, addressing select media prior to the upcoming season, expressed his enjoyment in seeing Russell in that position.

When inquired about his interactions with other F1 competitors since becoming champion, he stated: “I spoke to Alex [Albon] and George the other day because we played padel together. Particularly with them, since we entered F1 around the same time, I believe it has intensified their desire [that I’m champion].

The Englishman then chuckled, adding: “Especially for George because he is the bookmakers’ favorite; he’s a bit giddy at the moment! It’s great to witness.”

In a conversation with Sky Sports, Norris also quipped: “He is the clear favorite, to be honest! I fully concur with the bookmakers.”

Norris is confident that his fellow countryman possesses the capability to clinch the title.

“George and I have a good relationship. It’s not as if we communicate daily. However, I believe we hold a great deal of respect for one another.

“He demonstrates that towards me, and I genuinely believe he will secure a championship in the future, whether that occurs this year or next, or whenever it may be. I’ve relished my competitions with him, and he’s a wonderful person, so I’ve enjoyed all of it.”

The F1 season commences with the Australian Grand Prix on March 8.
