Japanese Grand Prix: Oscar Piastri leads in second practice as McLaren responds to Mercedes

Oscar Piastri topped the timesheets in the second practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix as McLaren responded to Mercedes at Suzuka, demonstrating some uncommon 2026 Formula 1 performance.
In the initial session, George Russell recorded the fastest time for Mercedes — who triumphed in the first two races of the season — but Piastri spearheaded the effort for McLaren in FP2, completing a lap 0.092 seconds quicker than Kimi Antonelli.
Russell secured third place for Mercedes, followed by a gap to Lando Norris in the other McLaren and the Ferraris driven by Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
Max Verstappen, a four-time world champion, faced a challenging season and finished only 10th in the leading Red Bull.
